John Charles Ryle (May 10, 1816 - June 10, 1900) was an evangelical Anglican clergyman and first Bishop of Liverpool. He was renowned for his powerful preaching and extensive tracts.

The Cross edition by JC Ryle Religion Spirituality eBooks

The Cross also appears in print in J.C Ryle's book 'Old Paths' which is a series of articles on the leading truths of the Christian Faith. It is also published by Chapel Library in Pensacola Florida as a separate booklet and also as a booklet(with the title What Think Ye Of The Cross?)published by Wildside Press.

What did brother Paul mean when he wrote 'God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ'.-J.C.Ryle contends that he meant "that he trusted in nothing but Jesus Christ crucified for the pardon of his sins and the salvation of his soul." This is the heart of the Gospel. If someone trusts in anything else,it will end with the ruin of their soul and that for all eternity.

But more specifically what did the eminent Apostle mean by 'The Cross'.Ryle notes that some take it to mean the wooden cross that Christ was put to death on(that is the meaning of the cross in Phillipians 2:8)others think it is the suffering and trials that believers face due to their testimony for the Lord Jesus(when we are bidden to take up our cross by our Lord,it does mean that in those verses)but in this verse Galatians 6:14 'God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ' the meaning is "the atonement that he made for sinners by his suffering for them on the cross".Christ crucified, the hope of glory, the rock upon which any sinners salvation must rest, the only hope for lost, guilty sinners to be made right with the Triune God.

The great emphasis that 'The Cross' is given in the life and ministry of Christ,by the Gospel writers reveals something of its importance.Bishop Ryle believed that it was a good thing to reflect upon often. If one is to live a cross centered life they must dwell on it frequently.Among the strongest motives to live a holy life is at the foot of the cross.-"I believe that holiness is nowhere so learned as on Calvary.I believe you cannot look at the cross without feeling your will sanctified, and your tastes made more spiritual."

The preaching of 'The Cross' is foolishness to many in the world in which we live. There is coming a day when the folly of those who think that, will be exposed for all to see. Here is great counsel if you are fearful, weary, struggling to be more godly-"Fix the eyes of your mind firmly on Jesus crucified and He shall deliver you from all your fears."
Ryle is always solid and very edifying, perhaps never more so than when the subject matter is the weightiest.

The Cross edition by JC Ryle Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

J.C. really inspires, enlightens and encourages us with his revelations on Christ cross. Also it's very easy to read, get it!
A must read
This is Great! A must read book for all modern day ministers of the Gospel. The Central Theme of the Gospel revealed. Very classic but very very relevant for today and all generations till He appears
Written in the typical Ryle style, this book shows the centrality of the cross in our Christian faith. Be ready for self-reflection and investigation of your beliefs and teachings to see if the cross is truly central in your faith.
When I was a young many, I remember our senior ministers advising the younger preachers to "start any where you want in the Bible but then quickly make a beeline to the Cross." This books contains amazing the insight and wisdom from a strong church leader of ages past. J. C. Ryle writings is like listening to a seasoned minister with decades of service to God and His children. Valuable reference material for research and preparation for sermons, teachings and private reflection.
I wish I could count the amount of times JC Ryle quoted the line "Behold the cross of Christ!" It is the most pertinent line throughout this book. I wished I would have found out about his writings sooner. I'm almost at a loss for words to type because I'm still meditating on what I experienced as I read and studied. Ryle starts off the book by asking us, the readers, what do we think and feel about the cross of Christ? That question should be asked of every believer. He follows after the Apostle Paul in quoting "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." There was so much I underlined and high-lighted and searched my heart about in this book. No one should remain the same after reading this. I appreciate Christ's sacrifice and cherish the cross even more after reading this. I can't wait to read other books by him. May the Lord add a blessing to the readers, doers, and hearers of His Word.
What did the Apostle Paul mean in saying, "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." That is R.C. Ryle's big question for us in his book "The Cross". He goes on to do an excellent job of challenging us to answer three question regarding the Apostle Paul's way of life in comparison to our response to the Christian life. Ryle goes on to present his case in answering three statements.
>>
I. Let me show you what the apostle Paul did not glory in.
II. Let me explain to you what he did glory in.
III. Let me show you why all Christians should think and feel about the cross like Paul.
>>
From these three brief statements we can then make the comparison and then ask of ourselves "Do I see the cross of Jesus Christ as Paul did?" This is an excellent read. OUTSTANDING!!!. Oh, another imortant feature is that the book is formated well for the kindle and the linked table of contents works.
